Description

Each bulb of multi-flowered Tulip 'Red Georgette' produces 3 to 7 open cup-shaped flowers in an intense and perfectly uniform cardinal red. Its main stem branches out into secondary stems, each bearing a flower for a long flowering period. It blooms at the end of the tulip season. The overall effect is an elegant bouquet, far from the somewhat stiff habit that some tulips have, in a rich shade, flattering for neighbouring plants. It is remarkable when paired with white flowers, in borders, flower beds, and containers.

'Red Georgette' multi-flowered Tulip belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, multi-flowered tulips have a branched floral stem with several flowers, relatively small compared to less floriferous varieties. The flowering period is staggered over time. Perched on stems 45 cm (18in) tall well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the elegant flowers, no more than 5 cm (2in) in diameter, are intense dark red, with silky highlights. Initially in the form of a narrow cup, they open up into wide corollas, with six petals, more precisely tepals, with rounded ends.  They flower in May, and mark the end of the tulip season.

The 'Red Georgette' multi-flowered Tulip fits well in all sunny flower beds. Its elegance forms very successful combinations with white tulips like 'Weise Berliner', or red and yellow bicoloured ones like 'Georgette'. Combine it with daffodils or jonquils, or for a different look, with Corsican hellebores, lady's mantle, and euphorbias. Tulips can be planted in borders, rock gardens, flower beds, pots and containers. They go well with tall perennials like peonies and are ideal for elegant bouquets. In a vase, very little water at the bottom is enough! If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. 'Red Georgette' tulip will thrive in soil which is moist to dry in summer. Plant it in a sunny or partially shaded location. After flowering, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid depleting the plant.
