Description

Tulipa 'Strong Gold' is a particularly sturdy variety of triumph tulip, renowned for its resistance to diseases and weather conditions. It captivates with its bright buttery-yellow flowers tinged with a touch of orange in the centre of the shiny petals. It flowers for a particularly long time, and will attract attention whether in a vase or in the garden. This superb variety blooms in the middle of the tulip season.

'Strong Gold' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is to have narrow cup-shaped flowers. Its primrose-yellow flowers with pale-orange streaks perch on sturdy and thick stems, 40cm (16in) high above the widely lanceolate leaves. The flowers form a corolla of six "petals" (more precisely tepals) that reveal a canary-yellow interior. The stems are unaffected by bad weather. Flowering takes place in April, in the heart of the tulip season.

'Strong Gold' is ideal in large flower beds, and looks wonderful in bouquets. Its elegance can be combined with white or red tulips, creating a beautiful contrast. This also maximises the duration of flowering in flower beds. Combine it with daffodils, jonquils, hyacinths, Corsican hellebores, and euphorbias for stunning scenes. It can also be planted in borders, rockeries, pots and containers. This tulip beautifully enhances balconies and patios. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials and is ideal for creating elegant bouquets. Only use a small amount of water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, 15cm (6in) deep and spaced 10cm (4in) apart. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add manure or poorly decomposed compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. 'Strong Gold' will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Place it in a sunny or partially shaded location. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
