Description

The Dahlia 'Pink Butterfly' is a very floriferous variety of decorative dahlia. The round, semi-double flowers have blush pink petals striped with creamy yellow, and they bloom from July to October.

This perennial has tuberous roots, which are swollen. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow, and branched stems, carrying compound leaves with rounded odd-pinnate leaflets. Solid, fleshy stems, 1.20m (4ft) tall, are topped with ligulate flowers grouped together, measuring 13cm (5in) in diameter.

The Dahlia 'Pink Butterfly' grows best in rich, clayey but healthy soil, deeply worked in warm and sunny locations, sheltered from prevailing winds. It struggles in poor and sandy soils.

The Dahlia 'Pink Butterfly' is used in mixed flower beds with other varieties or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, consider the dimensions for the composition of your flower beds.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Pink Butterfly' should be planted from mid-April to early May, at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always provide support stakes and loosely tie the young stems. Add slow-release compost or organic fertiliser during planting, and liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated, dark place that is not too humid. Transplant them in early May when the risk of frost has passed.
