Description

Dahlia 'Purple Pearl' is a sculptural variety of decorative dahlia. Its round, double flowers bear deep purple petals edged with white, giving a striking effect. They bloom from July to October.

This perennial has tuberous roots that are swollen. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow and branched stems, bearing compound leaves with rounded leaflets. It develops solid and fleshy stems, reaching 1m (3ft) tall. They are topped with clustered ligulate flowers measuring 10cm (4in) in diameter.

Dahlia 'Purple Pearl' thrives in rich, clayey soil that is deeply worked. It prefers a warm and sunny location, sheltered from prevailing winds. It struggles in poor, sandy soils.

Dahlia 'Purple Pearl' is perfect in mixed flower beds. The flowers are also ideal for bouquets.

Tips: when planting, consider the dimensions of the dahlia when planning your beds.

Planting and care

Dahlia 'Purple Pearl' should be planted from mid-April to early May. Plant at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in), spaced 60cm (24in) apart. Always provide support stakes and loosely tie the young stems. Apply slow-release compost or organic fertiliser when planting, and liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost arrives, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store the tubers in a cool, well-ventilated, dark place that is not too humid. Transplant in early May when the risk of frost has passed
