Description
The Calla or Zantedeschia 'Crystal Blush' is a particularly elegant and irresistible variety of florist's Arum, which will make a big impact in a vase, as well as in a pot in a refined contemporary interior. Its white cone-shaped flowers delicately edged with pink bloom in summer on beautiful bright green foliage. They will also bring life to the edge of a body of water, or potted plants immersed in shallow water on the terrace. Not very hardy, this tuberous plant requires heat and a soil that is both moist and very rich to thrive.
Zantedeschia 'Crystal Blush' is one of the many hybrids that have been obtained by cross-breeding between two main species native to Eastern and Southern Africa, namely Zantedeschia rehmannii and Z. elliottiana. The vegetation emerges from the ground in spring, in the form of large arrow-shaped green leaves, very decorative outside of the flowering period. Of medium size, this Calla measures between 50 and 60cm (20 and 24in) tall. Like other hybrids, this plant requires specific growing conditions to flower, from June to August. The flower, characteristic of Arums, produces a highly ornamental spathe, almost 10cm (4in) in diameter, hiding a golden yellow spadix in its black heart. The spathe is white when it blooms, then it slightly blushes along the edges over time. Its thick roots grow perpendicularly into the growing medium, they are fleshy and trailing rhizomes. In nature, this plant grows in marshes that usually dry out in summer, under hot climates all year round. The vegetation dries out, and the tuber enters a period of dormancy. This vegetative cycle must be strictly respected in cultivation. Florist's Arums live for many years if the cyclic rest period is well respected.
Zantedeschia 'Crystal Blush' is particularly suited for pot cultivation, which allows it to be sheltered in winter and to control the moisture of the growing medium. It can also be planted in a cool area, near a water feature, or even partially submerged during flowering. Combine its flowers with high-class bouquets, with fern leaves, white freesias, or lilies for example.

Planting and care
Plant your 'Crystal Blush' Calla bulbs from March to April, at a depth of 12cm (5in), spaced 15cm (6in) apart, preferably in a moist location, in full sun or partial shade. Apply organic fertilizer at planting time and at least once a year. They can also be grown in large pots, but make sure to water them regularly to keep the soil moist, and provide fertilizer every 2 months during the growing season. Mulch them when the first cold weather arrives, as they are not very resistant to winter humidity and severe frost, especially in the north. If grown in pots, store them indoors during the winter. They will form beautiful flowering clumps from June to August in a few years. You can trim the foliage after the first frost.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
