Description

The Trailing Begonia 'Balcony Mix' brings together two stars of summer window boxes: 'Golden Balcony', with warm golden yellow and orange tones, and 'Pink Balcony', with large double flowers in pink and white. Together, they create a very floriferous cascade from summer until the first frosts. Perfect for decorating hanging baskets, containers, or window ledges, this duo adds a highly decorative touch even in the shaded corners of the garden or terrace. With appropriate care, it is possible to encourage reflowering.

Botanically, Begonia × tuberhybrida Cascade Group 'Golden Balcony' and 'Pink Balcony' are tuberous begonias with a trailing habit, cultivated as non-hardy perennials in our climate. The young plants reach 25 to 35 cm in height, their flexible stems then cascade down to 40–50 cm in length. The slightly bicoloured, double flowers offer a palette ranging from golden yellow to warm orange for 'Golden Balcony', and from bright pink to light pink edged with white for 'Pink Balcony'. The flowering period extends from June to October if faded flowers are regularly removed. Plant them in a humus-bearing, organically rich, moist, but well-drained soil, in a partially shaded position or in dappled sunlight, avoiding the scorching afternoon sun. Plant the bulbs (tubers) in spring, hollow side up, at a depth of about 3–5 cm, after the frosts; they can be started in pots under cover from March to gain a few weeks of flowering.

The trailing begonia Balcony mix is charming in a hanging basket, tall bowl, or planter; its cascades of golden and pink flowers are visible from afar. In a hanging basket, pair it with Lobelia 'Crystal Palace', with its small midnight blue flowers, or with Bacopa Gulliver Dynamic White, which forms a cloud of white flowers. To enhance the luminous effect, add foliage like that of the variegated dwarf ivy Hedera helix 'Little Diamond'. In a window box, it pairs very well with a trailing fuchsia like 'Princess Dollar'.

Planting and care

Plant your Balcony begonias in a shaded or lightly sunny position, in light and moist soil, rich in humus. Begonias dislike overly heavy soils; lighten if necessary with sand. Plant after the last frosts, one per pot of about twenty centimetres, or spaced 25 cm apart in open ground. Position the tuber with the concave (hollow) part facing upwards, then cover with 5 cm of soil. As with Dahlias, you can accelerate their cycle by planting them as early as February, in sheltered pots, moving them outside in May. Water very regularly. Apply begonia fertiliser at planting, then twice a month during the season. Remove faded flowers. Dig up the bulbs before the first frosts, and store them in a little peat, in a dry and cool place, during the winter.
This is a shade plant which will grow better if it benefits from a few hours of sunlight per day. It appreciates light soils rich in organic matter (well-rotted garden compost) that do not retain moisture. Furthermore, it is quite sensitive to powdery mildew and nematodes and requires regular, but not excessive, watering. Begonia is a frost-tender plant, it does not tolerate sub-zero temperatures. For this reason, it is often grown in containers which are easy to bring into a greenhouse or heated conservatory at the first chill. If it is in open ground, remove them and store them under cover until the following spring.
