Caladiums, also known as elephant ear, classified among the summer bulbs, are perennial plants with tubers from the family of Araceae that charm with their very large heart-shaped leaves in rich and varied colours, which are extremely decorative from spring to autumn.

Reaching a height of 90 cm (35in), like Caladium 'Pink Beauty' with large marbled pink leaves, or Caladium bicolor 'Candidum', with white leaves veined with green, they are wonderful plants for pots, and they provide an unique and colourful display for the patio during the summer season. Originating from South America and the Caribbean, they are very tender tropical species that appreciate warm and wet environments and thrive on the veranda or greenhouse. The bulb should be stored in a cellar during winter, ideally at 18°C (64.4°F), and brought back into vegetation around March.

Caladium, being a somewhat delicate plant, can also be considered an annual. It should always be kept away from drafts and in gentle light to maintain its vibrant colours. It can also be planted in the garden, under trees, in humus-rich soil, after the last frost. The colours of the Caladium are so astonishing that they allow for magnificent combinations: white, blood red, pink, cream, numerous shades of green, variegated, speckled, two-tone, marginate patterns...
