Description

This Tuberose Duo brings together two varieties of Polianthes tuberosa 'La Perle' and 'Pink Sapphire' with double flowers and a sweet fragrance. Their long spikes loaded with flowers are enchanting from July to October, especially in bouquets. To successfully grow these tender Mexican plants, it is essential to provide them with sun and warmth from spring to summer. They are grown in pots in most regions, to allow us to fully enjoy their fragrance in summer and bring them indoors in winter.

The duo consists of:

1 x Double White Tuberose 'La Perle': floral stem reaching 80 cm high, adorned with semi-double to double flowers which are pink in bud and become pearly white. They exhale an incomparable, sweet and spicy fragrance.

1 x Hybrid Tuberose 'Pink Sapphire': a rarer, more resistant variety, taller than the previous one, reaching up to 1.20 m high when flowering. Its floral spike is loaded with very double, smoky pink, mauveish flowers with the same enchanting fragrance.

Bulbs are labelled separately.

Growing in pots is recommended in most regions: For earlier flowering, bulbs can be brought into growth indoors and placed outside in April (if temperatures reach around 15°C during the day). Tuberose can be planted in large pots with a diameter of 25 to 30 cm for 1 bulb and 3 bulbs per pot with a diameter of 40 to 50 cm. The pots should be brought indoors in winter, until the following April. Staking the floral spikes is usually required.

In regions with a warm climate, plant Polianthes tuberosa in early spring, when the soil is warmed up (10/15°C). Choose a very sunny location, as they need warmth to flower. Plant in a light, rich, well-drained soil, 10 cm deep, 10 to 30 cm apart. Depending on the planting date, flowering occurs between July and October. Dig up the clumps before the first frost and store the tubers in sand, protected from frost and kept at a temperature above 10°C. You may find bulblets on the periphery of the main bulb. You can gently remove them and put them in pots for the following season. However, they will not flower in the first year.

Planting and care

In regions with a warm climate, plant Polianthes tuberosa in early spring, when the soil is warmed up (10/15°C). Choose a very sunny location, as they need warmth to flower. Choose well-drained soil, and plant them at a depth of 10 cm, spaced 10 to 30 cm apart. Dig up the clumps before the first frost and store the tubers in sand, protected from freezing and kept at a temperature above 10°C. You may find bulblets on the periphery of the main bulb. You can gently remove them and put them in pots for the following season. However, they will not flower in the first year.

Pot cultivation (recommended in most regions): To achieve earlier flowering, bulbs can be brought into growth in pots and taken outside in April (if temperatures reach around 15°C during the day). Tuberose can be planted in large pots with a diameter of 25 to 30 cm for 1 bulb, and 3 bulbs per pot with a diameter of 40 to 50 cm. The pots should be brought indoors in winter until the following April.
