Description

'Blanche Ronde à Oeuf' is a dwarf variety, only 25 to 35 cm high, making it an ideal choice for growing in pots. Its produces round, white, fleshy fruit about the size of an egg... this variety certainly lives up to its name! Sow from February to April for a harvest 5 months later.

Aubergine first appeared in Europe during the 14th century but has been cultivated in India and China since ancient times. Also known as Eggplant in American English, it is generally served cooked, stuffed, grilled on the barbecue or incorporated into gratin or ratatouille. Aubergine has calming, diuretic properties and contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, and C as well as iron and calcium.

Harvesting: Pick the mature fruit when required from July to October.

Storage: Aubergines will keep up for up to a week in the refrigerator. Once steamed, they can be stored in the freezer for 6 to 8 months.

Good to know: Weed and hoe regularly. For bigger fruits, pinch out the terminal growing points.

Planting and care

Sowing

Aubergines will require well-decomposed compost (3 kg/m²) to be added in late autumn or early spring before sowing. The seeds should be sown in pots filled with fine compost, kept warm indoors from February onwards, in a bright location. From April, you can sow directly in the ground at the final planting site. Keep the substrate moist. To aid germination, which can sometimes be erratic, place the seeds in the bottom of the fridge (4 to 5°C) for a few days.

Care

When the young plants have 5 to 6 leaves, transplant them into buckets of compost or directly into the ground, in a warm location. Remove side shoots and pinch the young plant when it has formed 2 or 3 clusters of flowers, as this encourages branching. Remove any suckers that develop at the base, as they tend to unnecessarily exhaust the plant. A good mulch helps to keep the soil moist and reduces the need for weeding.
