I am quite disappointed with the composition of the mesclun which does not match the description. No lamb's lettuce or spinach. No chervil, which is a classic ingredient in mesclun, but instead an unmentioned majority of rocket. Since I already have rocket seedlings, it is really redundant. In the end, only what appears to be cut-and-come-again lettuce (and the rocket that I removed during thinning) persist in the cultivation. It should be noted that the customer service did not provide me with the information regarding the composition when I inquired. I will not be sowing these seeds again.

Description

The mesclun is a varied selection of salads, composed of lettuces, spinach and lamb's lettuce. Harvests are possible all year round: ideal for cold greenhouse cultivation in winter or open ground cultivation in summer and autumn. Mesclun can be enjoyed both as young shoots and when ripe. Sowing takes place under cover in March-April and September-October, and in open ground from May to August. Harvests extend from April to November.

Mesclun, from the Provençal word 'mesclum', which means mixture, is a salad composed of different varieties, at least five for purists, such as lettuce, rocket, spinach, lamb's lettuce... Highly appreciated for its wide range of flavours, this small salad is usually harvested as a 'young shoot' and can be consumed almost all year round, raw or even cooked.
Busy gardeners will appreciate these seed mixes as much as gourmets, as they allow for a wide range of flavours to be obtained at little cost and in a single sowing. These salads are called 'cut and come again' as they usually have the ability to regrow after harvesting, as long as the plant has not been completely harvested. Growing these mixes is easy and space-efficient, as they can generally be grown in pots, on a balcony ledge, or in small spaces such as square foot gardens.

Harvest: these salad mixes are harvested as needed, either as juvenile or ripe plants. Harvesting is done with a knife and involves picking the leaves located on the periphery of the plant.

Storage: Mesclun can be stored for a few days in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator, but if possible, consume it just after picking to enjoy its freshness.

Gardener's tip: Flea beetles, tiny beetles, are fond of Rocket leaves, which are often part of Mesclun. They meticulously puncture the leaves in dry and hot weather. While spraying Tansy infusion can limit the damage, the installation of insect netting from the moment of sowing remains the most effective method of control while avoiding the use of insecticides, which, even if of natural origin, have consequences on the garden's balance.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Sow in the sun or partial shade, in moist, fertile, and well-prepared soil. Directly in the open ground during summer or under cover (cold greenhouse, tunnel, frame) from autumn to the end of spring, trace furrows 1 cm (0.5 in) deep, spaced 35 cm (14in) apart, and sow in rows by placing one seed every 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in). When the plants are large enough to handle, thin them out by keeping only one plant every 10 cm (4in) for harvesting as "young shoots" or every 30 cm (12in) for mature harvest.

Germination occurs at a temperature of around 16°C (60.8°F) and takes an average of 10 days. Growing this mix is entirely possible in pots or small spaces like raised beds, so sow broadcast and thin out by keeping only one plant every 10 cm (4in). To have these salads throughout the year or almost, consider spreading out your sowings over time.

Cultivation:

These little lettuces are undemanding but still require rich and well-drained soil. It is advisable, preferably in autumn, to apply a moderate amount of mature compost by raking it in to a depth of 5 cm (2in), after having, as with any vegetable cultivation, thoroughly loosened the soil.
