Physalis, Calyx or Cape Gooseberry from the Solanaceae family, is a species of herbaceous plant comprising several varieties grown in vegetable gardens for their fruit. Their berries are enclosed in a calyx which gives them a rather exotic appearance. Some varieties are used as a cooking fruit for jams or to decorate pastries, while others - the Tomatillos - are used in savoury dishes for their tangy flavour. These small fberries about the size of a cherry are generally yellow-orange and extremely high in vitamin C and minerals.
