Description

Syngonium 'Pixie' is a compact and elegant variety, prized for its arrowhead-shaped foliage with a bright white variegation around the central vein, which gradually blends into the green of the leaf. It is a small plant, an excellent choice for small spaces, such as shelves, desks, or bedside tables, for example. It can be grown as a trailing vine, as a climbing plant on a support, or pruned to maintain a bushy shape. To preserve the brilliance of its colours, place this Syngonium in a bright spot without direct sunlight and ensure adequate ambient humidity is maintained.

Belonging to the Araceae family, Syngonium 'Pixie', also called 'Nana', is a horticultural cultivar derived from the species Syngonium podophyllum, nicknamed "Goosefoot". This plant exhibits moderately long, trailing growth. It is compact, typically reaching between 30 and 40 cm in height and spread at maturity. The smooth, dark green leaves are arrow-shaped, speckled and blotched with white from the centre. This cultivar does not flower. Its flexible stems can be guided onto a support.
The Syngonium genus comprises around 36 species native to the humid tropical forests of Central and South America, notably from Mexico to Brazil. In their natural habitat, these plants climb trees, benefiting from the high humidity and dappled light under the canopy. They grow in a bushy form and eventually become vines, as they are climbers at heart! In indoor cultivation, they appreciate bright indirect light, high ambient humidity, and a well-draining substrate to best replicate their natural conditions.

Syngonium 'Pixie' will thrive with good light levels and high ambient humidity. It tolerates less bright and humid conditions, but its growth and the brilliance of its foliage will then be affected. In a contemporary or minimalist interior, it introduces a subtle note of colour. For a jungle effect, pair it with other plants from the Araceae family, such as Philodendrons and Alocasias, which share similar light and humidity requirements.

Maintenance and care

Watering tips

Water when the substrate is dry on the surface. In winter, reduce the watering frequency. Mist the foliage regularly to maintain high ambient humidity.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot in spring every 1 to 2 years or when the roots start to outgrow the pot.
Use a well-draining potting mix enriched with organic matter, ideally mixed with clay pebbles or perlite to promote aeration and prevent waterlogging.
Provide this variety with a balanced liquid fertiliser for green plants, applied every 2 to 3 weeks during the growing period (spring and summer). Reduce the frequency in autumn and winter.

Houseplant care

This undemanding plant simply needs you to remove yellowed leaves and clean dusty leaves with a damp cloth to maintain their shine.
Prune the stems regularly to encourage branching and maintain a compact or climbing form according to your preference.

Disease and pest advice

In case of scale insects, use a cotton pad soaked in alcohol to remove them, then spray a soapy water solution to prevent reinfestation. In case of red spider mite infestation, increase the ambient humidity and clean the leaves with a damp cloth. Shower the foliage, same for aphids.
