Alceas rosea or Hollyhocks are typically large perennials, except for certain varieties like Spring Celebrities or Summer Carnival. Annuals, they have the unusual feature of having double flowers of about 5 cm (2in) in diameter with a wide range of colours from July to September. The unbranched floral stems, 75 cm (30in) to 1.50 m (5ft) tall, bear alternate, lobed and rough, light green leaves. Melliferous, these easily cultivated plants like rich, well-drained soils and sunny positions, that are sheltered from the wind which can flatten the flower spikes. Hollyhocks are very susceptible to rust.  Magnificent as a backdrop in borders, they are essential in English gardens. Ideal against a trellis or an old wall.

You'll love them!
