The varieties called Lacecap, serrata and others are magnificent in flower beds or on their own and are sublime when mixed with varieties of large pendulous flowers. Can I plant them in my region? Hydrangeas adapt everywhere, they appreciate fertiliser every year, mulch them in the coldest regions. A hydrangea to bloom on my balconies? You need a pot of at least 30 cm (12in), with drainage (a few stones at the bottom of the pot!). To make my hydrangeas turn blue? Add iron sulfate and alum to your soil during the growing season!

- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
