Courgettes – Curcurbita pepo – from the Cucurbitaceae family is a squash consumed as a vegetable and harvested from the vegetable garden when still young and tender. Often cylindrical, this fruit-vegetable can also be spherical like the Courgette 'Eight Ball'. The young plants are transplanted into the field from mid-May to mid-July, when the risk of frost has passed. Space your plants 80cm (32in) apart in all directions. The courgette is appreciated by gardeners because it is prolific and easy to cultivate. Moreover, it is rich in vitamins and minerals.
