These perennial plants originating from the Mediterranean basin to East Asia, grow in forests, undergrowth edges and sometimes even in meadows. The oriental hellebores, H. niger, are appreciated above all for the beauty of their cup-shaped flowers that bloom from December to April depending on the species, others like the H. sternii or H. foetidus are cultivated for their ornamental foliage, decorative all year round.
