Hatchets, mauls, and wedges are the preferred tools for notching, tree cutting, or preparing firewood. They are essential equipment for all logging work.
- Sharp, lightweight, and manoeuvrable, the hatchet allows for deep notching of wood, and is used to fell small trees. The hatchet can also cut wider-sectioned branches than is possible with a pruner.
- Heavy and sharp, the maul - also known as a splitting axe - is used to break and split knot-free wood that is intended for heating. Once split, the logs can dry and serve as fuel.
- The steel wedge is used to split stubborn logs that are dense or have knots. A steel mallet is used to forcefully drive the wedge in and split the difficult logs.
