A selection of hardy Lagerstroemia or Indian Lilac, suitable for northerly regions. These summer lilac varieties are particularly resistant to frost and their flowering is early enough to be enjoyed even in the less sunny and less warm regions. While classic Lagerstroemia varieties generally withstand temperatures down to -12°C (10.4°F), new cultivars such as INDIYA CHARMS® are indeed capable of enduring brief freezes of -15°C (5°F), or even -18°C (-0.4°F) when sheltered from the cold wind!
It is mainly young plants that fear severe frost, so it would be wise to protect them during their first two or three winters and choose their location carefully. The full range of colours found in Lagerstroemia is present: from cherry red in 'Dynamite' to soft pink in 'Summer Charm Hopi', and from mauve to white in 'Neige d'Été' for example. The size of these bushes varies from a small tree reaching 4m (13ft) in height to a bush barely exceeding one meter in height. The choice is vast, depending on whether the gardener wants to plant it in the garden or in a large pot on the terrace.
