Rostrinucula, also known as Tree Mint, is a late-flowering bush from the Lamiaceae family, not commonly planted in our gardens. The most common variety is Rostrinucula dependens, which produces mauve-pink spikes reminiscent of buddleias (earning it the nickname weeping buddleja), attracting many pollinators. Rostrinucula are known for their long drooping flowering spikes that bloom in late summer. The rarer Rostrinucula sinensis, native to China, produces more compact and lighter spikes. Rostrinucula dependens 'Happy Cascade' forms a unique vegetal cascade at the end of summer.
With its arching branches and flexible habit, this plant from Asia can reach between 1.5 and 2 m in height depending on the variety Its elongated slightly fuzzy leaves enhance its decorative appearance. It thrives in full sun and well-drained, not too dry soil. Hardy down to -10/-12°C, Tree Mint fits well in borders, informal hedges, or can be grown in large pots on a sheltered terrace.
