Red climbing roses offer a richly coloured flowering, powerful, expressive, and structural, perfect for walls, pergolas, or arbours. These varieties, whether perpetual or not, span the entire spectrum of reds, from velvety crimson to scarlet red, including deep, almost-black reds.

The ‘Etoile de Hollande’ rose is prized for its very double, deep velvety red flowers with a strong fragrance. It offers perpetual flowering on dark green foliage. The old garden rose ‘Guinée’ charms with its large, highly fragrant dark purple-red flowers; it blooms mainly in early summer, sometimes with a more discreet second flush. More vibrant, ‘Sympathie’ produces large semi-double vermilion red flowers, grouped in clusters, on a vigorous plant, ideal for a sunny trellis. ‘Florentina’, a recent variety, combines an intense cherry red with reliable perpetual flowering and a compact habit, suited for small spaces. David Austin's English rose ‘Falstaff’, with its deep crimson and fragrant blooms, can also be trained as a small climber on a sturdy support. ‘Excelsa’, though not perpetual, is highly floriferous in early summer, covered in small carmine red flowers grouped in large clusters; it works wonderfully on fences or arbours.
Red is also one of the few colours that retains its full intensity in full sun, where other shades fade or disappear.

These roses perform best in full sun or partial shade, in rich, well-drained soil. Train their stems from planting to encourage even flowering, and lightly prune after each flush of flowers to stimulate further blooming, where the variety allows.
