Our range of contorted willows. In the garden, their spiralled branches create a sculptural silhouette, very visible in winter, and they can also be used in cut flower arrangements. The most well-known is Salix matsudana ‘Tortuosa’, a small tree of 5 to 8 m, with twisted branches and spring catkins, ideal as a specimen plant or near a water feature. Salix ‘Erythroflexuosa’ with golden twisted young shoots and a flexible habit, is a small weeping tree that is very bright in late winter. The ‘Caradoc’ variety offers the same contorted appearance, with bright yellow branches that warm up winter scenes and floral displays.
The branches are very decorative once cut, suitable for dried or fresh cut flower arrangements.
Willows generally prefer moist to wet soil, in sun or partial shade; they tolerate wind and cold, but not prolonged drought.
Plant in autumn or spring in loosened soil, water regularly the first year, then prune in late winter to thin out the centre, control vigour and promote new coloured stems.
