Gaura is an exceptionally generous perennial plant which offers a multitude of small flowers as light as butterflies. Belonging to the Onagraceae family, it is a fast-growing plant with a truly graceful bushy habit. Its numerous and slender branched flower stems give the plant its bushy appearance. Flowering occurs in successive waves from mid-spring to autumn. Its deciduous foliage disappears in winter. This plant, which does not exceed 1m (3ft) in height, is both elegant and proud and, although short-lived, is essential in a flowerbed. Perfect for a natural and low-water garden, even in windy exposures and limestone soil, Gaura simply requires a very sunny position to flower well. The hardiness of the wild species is around -12°C (10.4°F) to -15°C (5°F) in well-drained soil, with hybrids and varieties sometimes being slightly more frost-sensitive. Sowing is easy, and flowering is quick.
