After tracing the outlines of your flowerbed or border and carefully preparing the soil, you will want to start planting your perennials and annual seedlings. Depending on the size of your plants, you will need to equip yourself with a spade, a small trowel, or a single transplanting tool. The transplanting tool is a kind of very small shovel with a short handle. It is used to break the surface crust of the soil, dig planting holes, mix substrates or amendments, open up the soil to plant bulbs or seeds, or transplant (hence its name) seedlings by getting under their roots. "Narrow spade" models are more suitable for pot planting and clay soils.
