The common guava and its varieties, for example Psidium guajava 'Lemon', is a small tropical fruit tree that is increasingly popular in our gardens for its ornamental aspect and the unique flavour of its fruits. Guavas are appreciated for their evergreen foliage, delicate flowers, and fragrant fruits.
The Chinese guava (Psidium cattleyanum) is distinguished by its dense foliage and small bright red berries with a sweet and tangy taste. It can tolerate -5°C. The strawberry guava (Psidium littorale), on the other hand, is characterised by its round, red, slightly acidic fruits with a flavour reminiscent of strawberries. This variety can tolerate temperatures slightly below zero, making it a good choice for regions with mild winters.
The common guava (Psidium guajava) is the most common variety, producing large yellow fruits with tender and fragrant flesh. Its dark green leaves and white flowers with yellow stamens add a decorative touch to the garden. The common guava thrives in warm and humid climates, but it can be grown in pots in cooler regions.
Guavas are relatively easy to grow, requiring a sunny exposure and well-drained soil. Regular watering is essential, especially during the growth and fruiting period. To ensure good fruiting, a spring application of compost or organic fertiliser is recommended.
In terms of maintenance, it is important to prune the guava after harvest to maintain its shape and promote the production of new fruit-bearing branches. Also, keep an eye out for signs of diseases or pests, such as fruit flies, and treat them promptly to prevent any spread.
