The bupleurums (Bupleurum) are perennials, annuals or shrubs found throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Their appearance and requirements vary depending on the species, but they all thrive in sunny spaces. The plant forms a large rosette of long, dark green, single leaves that turn very light green. The hollow stems bear large umbels composed of flowers ranging from greenish-yellow to lemon yellow, which are very bright and reminiscent of some euphorbias. Bupleurums grow in any well-drained soil, including rocky and limestone soils and poor or rich soils.
