Groundcover spurges are perennials used to clothe a bank, edge a path, fill a rockery or cover the base of shrubs in difficult soil. Depending on the species, they prefer sun and dry ground or the partial shade of woodland. With decorative, yellow-green flowering in spring, many also offer evergreen or ornamental foliage for a large part of the year.

In a dry garden, Euphorbia myrsinites, the Corsican spurge, forms a low, blue-grey carpet, architectural among stones or along the edge of a low wall. Euphorbia cyparissias ‘Fens Ruby’ suits wilder spaces: its fine foliage, purple in spring and well coloured in autumn, quickly covers the ground, but its vigour requires space. In shaded, drier situations, Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae is useful under deciduous trees, where few perennials tolerate root competition. Euphorbia dulcis ‘Chameleon’, which forms more of a cushion than a carpet, stands out with its dark foliage and good performance at the border.

In poor, free-draining soils, you can plant spurges for dry ground, also well suited to rockeries, banks and gardens which are not watered.
