Everyone knows the Iris germanica, also known as the garden iris, which has become world famous thanks to the paintings of Van Gogh and Monet. It owes its popularity to its unique design. Its broad, stiff leaves, shaped like a sword, contrast with crumpled, multicolored flowers perched high up. The flowers have the particularity of forming three large upright petals and three trailing sepals, called "beard". The flowering lasts a few weeks in May/June. This Iris has large fleshy rhizomes creeping on the ground. It likes sun light, warmth and light ,well-drained soils. It does not suffer in the cold or summer drought, its true danger is moisture, especially in heavy soils.
