Leucadendrons are shrubs native to South Africa, similar to proteas, with a particularly exotic look. The small flowers arranged in more or less conical inflorescences are surrounded by long and very showy bracts, organised in stars, whose colour varies over time and depending on the variety. Like proteas, Leucadendrons have a strange biology as they need fire to germinate their seeds. However, unlike proteas, male and female plants are clearly distinct. Unfortunately, these shrubs are sensitive to cold and requiring delicate care. They are very attractive plants, when the soil and climate are suitable for their cultivation in contemporary or Mediterranean-inspired gardens, either planted in groups or as individual specimens, especially near the sea. Leucadendrons thrive in poor, well-drained soil and require a very sunny position.
