The allium, widely represented in the vegetable garden with onion, garlic cloves, and chives, includes many cultivated varieties for the beauty of their round ball flowers perched on top of tall stems, known as ornamental garlic. Alliums, familiar in contemporary gardens, are superb in borders. Their flowering is very long and occurs from April to July, depending on the varieties. Their lilac, mauve, and violet colours bring a lot of freshness when combined with pink and white. Their height varies depending on the variety, from 0.20 m (1ft) to 1.50 m (5ft), and their flowers have a diameter ranging from 5 to 40 cm (2 to 16in). They go very well with the tall flower spikes of eremurus, with peonies with which they form superb borders, and more generally with contemporary-inspired perennials. They make beautiful bouquets of fresh and dried flowers. Mediterranean bulbs are to be grown in full sun; planted in well-drained and rather dry soil, they will return for many years.

You'll love them!
