Description
Allium stipitatum 'Mount Everest', or ornamental garlic, is a rare and elegant bulbous plant. In spring, it displays rounded and light white umbels pierced with green nuances, composed of hundreds of small flowers. This variety has a strong stem that allows it to withstand the wind, like tall grasses. It is a plant with a wild charm that has retained the memory of its oriental origins. It is vigorous and durable in well-drained soils, in the sun, and tolerates summer drought well.
Originally from Central Asia, Allium stipitatum grows on rocky slopes and high-altitude meadows. The 'Mount Everest' variety is a recent creation. The inflorescences, perched at 1m (3ft) in height, correspond to large round umbels that can measure up to 10cm (4in) in diameter, and are made up of many pure white flowers. This flowering period is between May and June. The foliage consists of 4 to 6 wide basal leaves with a grey-green hue. The leaves are somewhat hairy. The foliage turns yellow and disappears at the same time as the flowering appears, which is a good adaptation to hot and dry summer conditions.
Easy to grow, the majestic Allium 'Mount Everest' appreciates any type of moist but well-drained soil during its growing period. It prefers a sunny location. It can be planted in beds, borders, and pots on a balcony or patio. Add a unique touch to your bouquets with its fresh or dried flowers. Plant them in groups of 5, nestled among ornamental grasses, perennials, or near roses or yellow broom. Plant them with topiary boxwood balls for a spectacular sculptural effect.
Handy vegetable gardening tip: plant some ornamental garlic in the middle of your strawberry plants to protect them from fungal diseases. They will provide a pleasant flowering that is sometimes lacking among vegetables.

Planting and care
Allium stipitatum 'Mount Everest' is an easy-to-grow ornamental garlic. Plant it preferably before the end of October so that it has enough time to establish itself. It is wary of winter moisture and waterlogged soil. Give it a sunny spot in well-drained soil, even if it's rocky. Plant at a depth of 10 or 15cm (4 or 6in), spaced 10cm (4in) apart. It is undemanding but does prefer poor soil.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
