The crocuses are the quintessential spring flowering bulbs. The botanical crocuses or Crocus chrysanthus are among the first spring blooms, starting in February-March, in yellow, white, and light blue-violet colours. The Crocus vernus, nicknamed "Mammoth", or 'Flower Record', 'Jeanne d'Arc', 'Grand Jaune', due to their large spectacular flowers, are a bit later, blooming in March-April. Easy to plant, they naturalise and faithfully come back year after year. They create a beautiful effect when planted as a carpet on a short grass meadow, mixed or in patches of colour. Plant them from September to November, in the sun, at a depth of 10 cm (4in), in groups of 5 or 10. The Crocus tommasinianus will bloom even in the shade of trees, alongside the snowdrops and the Eranthis.
