Nasturtiums orĀ Tropaeolum majus are annual dwarf or climbing plants, which are very floriferous with bright colours from May to October, ideal for flowerbeds, fences, pergolas or trellises in summer. These annual plants develop slender stems with rounded alternate leaves and funnel-shaped, solitary flowers, 5 cm (2in) in diameter. They come in all shades of red and yellow. Nasturtiums like sandy, dry, poor soil in sunny and warm locations. The flower buds can be pickled and used as capers. The edible flowers can be consumed in salads. Rich in vitamin C, they give a pungent taste to dishes.
