The Gherkin – Cucumis sativus – from the Cucurbitaceae family is an annual herbaceous plant cultivated in vegetable gardens for its immature fruit consumed as a condiment. It belongs to the same species as the Cucumber, but varieties such as the Fin de Meaux or the Vert Petit de Paris have been developed for specific use. The gherkin is sown in April-May in pots and transplanted after the last frost. Space your plants 50-60 cm (20-24in) apart in all directions. The Gherkin is a vegetable that requires regular watering as it is quite water-intensive.
