Our range of carnivorous plants brings together fascinating species that capture insects through ingenious traps. Some can be grown outdoors, in a peat bog or in a pot on the balcony, while others prefer the warm, humid atmosphere of a greenhouse, terrarium, or bright room.
Sarracenia, or pitcher plants, are outdoor plants that withstand cold well, particularly Sarracenia purpurea venosa. Their tube-shaped leaves attract and trap insects. They appreciate sun and waterlogged soil, ideally in an artificial peat bog. Dionaea muscipula, or Venus flytrap, thrives in a peat bog or in a pot on a sunny windowsill. Its jointed leaves quickly close on insects attracted by its nectar. Nepenthes, also known as tropical pitcher plants, are typically grown exclusively indoors in a greenhouse or terrarium, as they require high temperatures and humidity. The Drosera genus offers species suitable for both indoor and outdoor cultivation. Drosera capensis grows well indoors; its leaves are covered with sticky tentacles that capture insects. Drosera rotundifolia tolerates cold winters.
Carnivorous plants grow in an acidic, nutrient-poor substrate, such as peat, and require lime-free water (rainwater or demineralised water). They appreciate high humidity and, for indoor varieties, indirect but abundant light.
