Perennial shade-loving plants par excellence, hostas thrive in pots or in open ground. Although primarily ornamental for their deciduous green, gold, blue, or variegated foliage, they are also eye-catching in summer thanks to their white or mauve, sometimes fragrant flowers. Dimensions vary depending on the species, from 30cm (12in) for dwarf varieties to 1m (3ft) wide for giant hostas. Easy to grow and very hardy, they will need to be well protected from slugs and snails by surrounding the base with wood ash or sawdust.

You'll love them!
