Description

Hosta 'T Rex' is a giant variety, a majestic shade plant that forms a huge clump of very large, deeply veined leaves, of a medium green, slightly trailing. Its summer flowering, in spikes adorned with white bell-shaped flowers, adds to its charm. This sensational plant takes its time to express its full potential, but it deserves a prime location in the garden or in a very large pot on the terrace.

This Hosta, or Funkia T Rex is a horticultural creation dating back to 1999 resulting from the cross-breeding between the Hosta montana macrophylla and the cultivar 'Big John'. It is a completely hardy perennial plant that belongs to the lily or hosta family. From spring onwards this variety forms a giant clump of foliage. The plant, mature in 6 years, will reach a height of 90cm (35in) with a spread of 2m (7ft), if the growing conditions are met. The thick, heavy and slightly soft leaves can measure up to 45cm (18in) long. They are heart-shaped, slightly undulate and have well-marked veins. Their colour is a matte medium green. The flowering takes place in July-August, in the form of elongated white bell-shaped flowers, grouped towards the top of the peduncles that emerge slightly from the foliage. This perennial spreads through stolons, like strawberries. It is a long-lived plant.

The planting of the Hosta 'T Rex' must be carefully considered and wisely chosen, as the plant takes up space and attracts lots of attention. For example, it can be placed in isolation, to emphasise the curve of a shaded alley, on the edge of a woodland, sheltered from the wind, where the soil is deep and fertile. This large hosta will associate well with ferns, meadow rues and Claytonia sibirica, with which it forms beautiful colourful duos that require little maintenance. It will also work well in the company of acteas with purple foliage, columbines and tall foxgloves. All hostas grow well in pots and can remain in the same container for several years. A very large pot should be chosen for 'T Rex', and a special geranium potting soil should be used during the growing season. As long as the foliage is not too dense, watering can be done from the top of the pot. Then place a saucer under the pot where you pour the water, maintaining a constant level in summer.

Most species widespread in Western gardens have been introduced from Japan. Edible, hostas are called 'urui' in Japan where they are commonly consumed.

Planting and care

Hostas are planted in spring or autumn. Hostas like a deep, fertile, humus-rich, loose soil, preferably neutral to acidic (at least low in limestone), moist to wet throughout the year. Plant them in partial shade or dappled shade and in a position sheltered from strong winds.

Prepare a planting hole of 20cm (8in) x 20cm (8in) x 20cm (8in). If your soil is heavy, mix equal parts of compost with crumbled soil, partially refill the hole and place your plant so that the top of the root ball is covered with 3cm (1in) of soil. The addition of a base fertiliser (such as bonemeal) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Make sure to position the collar well above ground level. Firm the soil and water generously to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, regular watering will be necessary for a few weeks to facilitate the establishment of your plant. Also, water regularly during dry summers.

With their common preference for damp places, slugs and snails never stray far from hostas. Even though blue or variegated hostas often have thicker and tougher foliage, which is less appetising to slugs, these plants must be protected from gastropods. Protect your Hostas by surrounding them with ferramol-based granules (approved for Organic Agriculture), eggshells, coffee grounds, wood chips, or any dry and rough natural substance that repels them. Hedgehogs are the gardener's best allies in the fight against gastropods, as unlike chickens, they do not till the soil and do not attack the young green shoots of young plants. Finally, some plants have a repellent odour for slugs, such as wormwood and garlic.
