The shrubby germanders or Teucrium fruticans grouped here are evergreen shrubs for dry ground valued for their silvery-grey foliage and blue flowering. They easily find a place in a Mediterranean garden, on a slope, in a border, along a path edge, or in a large pot on a sunny terrace. Their naturally branching habit, tolerance to sea spray, and suitability for pruning make these Teucrium good structural plants in regions where winters are not too harsh. They mainly need sun and well-drained, poor or stony soil.
The species Teucrium fruticans is already appealing with its bright grey vegetation. ‘Azureum’ is a beautiful form with flowers of a deeper blue and a broader silhouette. 'Indyho’ is more compact, well-suited to small gardens, borders, and containers. 'Selection Erecta’ is more upright and lends itself well to forming low hedges or topiaries. These varieties share a simple and robust character, very well-adapted to gardens without watering. Their foliage remains decorative all year round, and their flowering can last several weeks, in autumn, spring, or summer, depending on the climate.
This category is naturally a part of Mediterranean shrubs and silver-grey foliage shrubs, two closely related families. For further reading, consult our dedicated guide « Germander, Teucrium: planting, care ».
