Yellow-flowered loosestrifes are hardy perennials with star-shaped or cup-shaped flowers ranging from pale yellow to golden yellow. Depending on the species, they form tall clumps or low carpets that cover the ground. Use them in beds, beside a pond or beneath trees, in soil that does not dry out in summer. They flower from June to September.
The dotted loosestrife, Lysimachia punctata, reaches approximately 1.20 m and bears numerous bright yellow flowers in summer, arranged around its upright stems. More lax and branched, Lysimachia lichiangensis produces a multitude of pale yellow flowers from July to September, above glaucous foliage. 'Fire Cracker' is distinguished by its chocolate-purple leaves and small, bright yellow flowers. Vigorous and rhizomatous, this variety can spread in moist soil. Very different, creeping Jenny, Lysimachia nummularia, rarely exceeds 10 cm in height. Its creeping stems root where they touch the soil and become covered with intensely yellow flowers in summer.
Upright species are planted at the back of a border, in a moist meadow or on a bank, while groundcover loosestrifes create a verdant carpet in cool shade. Our guide, "Loosestrife: planting, care and propagation", explains the needs of these plants and shows how to contain the most spreading species.
