Our range of Alpine Asters. Aster alpinus is a small alpine perennial for rock gardens, sunny borders and flowering walls. Earlier flowering than the tall autumn asters, it forms a low cushion that in spring or early summer becomes covered with daisies with yellow hearts. The colour palette ranges from pure white to pink, or lavender blues and blue-violets, depending on the variety. It is an undemanding, hardy plant, easy to grow in well-drained soil.
Choose your variety according to colour and the intended effect in the foreground of a border. Aster alpinus ‘Dunkle Schöne’ offers a deep violet-blue, with a beautiful brightness among stones or at the edge of a path. 'Goliath’, lavender blue, pairs well with dwarf carnations, campanulas for rock gardens and walls or small grasses. Aster alpinus ‘Albus’ is very bright with white flowers, while ‘Happy End’ is adorned with pink heads that combine well with mauve, silver or blue-grey tones.
In a dry, but not arid garden, Asters for rock gardens mingle with other small perennials that appreciate free-draining soils. For everything you need to know, see our complete guide "Asters: growing and care"
