Calluna vulgaris is a heathland plant that flowers in summer, hence the name 'summer heather'. They form, like their winter cousins, a low bush, covered with flowers of a lovely ruby red, pink or white colour, from August until early winter. Don't think they disappear in winter! They remain beautiful thanks to their evergreen foliage even when other plants are dormant. Originally from the steppe heathlands of Europe, Calluna vulgaris forms a carpetting groundcover, 30 cm (12in) in height and 40 to 60 cm (16 to 24in) in width. They are very bee-friendly plants that give bees a boost at the end of summer. Resistant to temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F), summer heathers thrive in sunny locations (in the north) or in partial shade (in the south). Plant them in a light, well-drained, humus-rich and ericaceous soil. They will be perfect as groundcover at the base of your evergreen bushes.

You'll adore them!
