All Our American Wisterias. These climbing plants from the New World mainly belong to the species Wisteria frutescens and its subspecies macrostachya, the Kentucky Wisteria. Less vigorous than their Asian cousins, they offer summer flowering, more moderate growth, and excellent hardiness. The American Wisteria ‘Amethyst Falls’ (Wisteria frutescens) is the most popular: it produces lavender-blue clusters in June-July, sometimes perpetual, and is well-suited to small spaces. The variety ‘Blue Moon’, derived from Wisteria frutescens var. macrostachya, stands out for its perpetual blue flowering; it can bloom up to three times in a season. ‘Longwood Purple’ offers deep violet flowers and moderate growth.

American Wisterias reach 4 to 6 m in height and twine clockwise, like their Japanese counterparts. Their later flowering, often coinciding with foliage, enhances the garden in summer. Their more modest development makes them particularly useful for terraces, medium-sized pergolas, or cultivation in large pots.

Plant them in full sun, in deep, moist, but well-drained soil, slightly acidic to neutral. Annual pruning encourages flowering, without being as essential as with Asian Wisterias.
