This is probably the most famous of camellias, and the one that immediately comes to mind when you talk about this genus. It's difficult to choose from all these magnificent camellias, but it's especially impossible not to find one that you'll like. Its slow growth gives it a compact habit, but over time it can become a bush of nearly 3 metres (10 feet) in all directions. The flowers are single, semi-double or double and non-fragrant, while its evergreen and alternate foliage is dark green in colour. These bushy shrubs thrive in shade or partial shade, preferably dappled shade rather than dense shade under a tree canopy. Camellia japonica should be planted in acidic, humus-bearing, moist but well-drained soil.
