Ravenala madagascariensis, better known as the traveller's tree, is a perennial tropical arborescent plant from the emblematic Strelitziaceae family of Madagascar.

An endemic species of humid tropical forests, it is the only one of its genus, but there are a few subspecies sought after by collectors. The traveller's tree has a characteristic appearance, instantly recognisable, with a ringed false trunk that supports large pinnate leaves resembling those of banana trees, but perfectly arranged in a fan, all in the same plane. In nature it often reaches heights of over 13 m (43ft), but will remain much smaller if grown in a container.

Outside the most sheltered coastal gardens of southern Europe, this very frost-sensitive plant will be stored in a bright room maintained at 17 °C in winter. The traveller's tree is a stunning and magnificent plant that will make a big impression in the conservatory or greenhouse. It has rapid growth and is quite voracious, appreciating water and fertiliser.
