All our Peonies for bouquets:
Peonies, voluptuous and opulent, are wonderful plants for our gardens. Some Chinese or Japanese peony varieties, renowned for their fragrant, long-lasting flowers in a vase, are also widely used by florists. They belong exclusively to the category of herbaceous peonies, meaning perennials that regrow from their roots, with their above-ground growth dying back in winter. The tree peony varieties, on the other hand, produce enormous and exceptionally beautiful flowers, but these are short-lived and not particularly suitable for making bouquets.
Growing your own peonies enables you to create sumptuous bouquets at a lower cost. Although a peony may take several years to become established before flowering, it is an exceptionally long-lived perennial that will provide you with increasingly abundant flowers for many years to come.
Often given as a gift in floral arrangements, the peony symbolises sincerity and modesty in Europe, and is also a sign of prosperity. The meaning of the colours is important: white to pale pink, the peony flower conveys a message of modesty and shyness, while pink expresses romance and red signifies respect, honour and wealth. Depending on the variety, there is a wide choice of shapes and colours.
You can also find all our advice on planting and growing them, as well as on their infinite diversity and examples of successful combinations in our dedicated articles.
Here are a few tips to extend the vase life of your peonies:
- use a good-sized vase filled with fresh water, changed regularly every day.
- before placing the stems in the water, remove all the leaves from the submerged part of the stems.
- using a pair of secateurs or sharp scissors, cut the ends of the stems at an angle, making a very clean cut.
- keep your bouquet out of direct sunlight and in a cool place. You can put it outside at night, sheltered from the wind.
