Our range of Cestrum. The most delightful is named Cestrum nocturnum, also called night-blooming jasmine or lady of the night: it is a bushy shrub with small, modest flowers, but very fragrant from nightfall. Cestrums create an exotic garden atmosphere. They are grown in the ground in very mild climates or in large containers on the terrace to be brought indoors in winter.
Cestrum elegans (purpureum) offers clusters of tubular purplish-pink flowers for much of the summer, even almost year-round in a conservatory or greenhouse. The Cestrum fasciculatum 'Newellii', or Mexican red Cestrum, with its carmine-red flowers and velvety leaves, has a naturally compact habit well-suited to pot cultivation on a sunny terrace.
These exotic shrubs, evergreen or semi-evergreen depending on the species, appreciate a sunny or bright position and a humus-bearing, fertile, well-drained soil that remains cool in summer. They are tender shrubs: outside coastal or very sheltered areas, Cestrum young plants are best grown in containers to be overwintered frost-free. Cestrums are preferably planted in spring. Protecting them from cold and excess winter moisture remains the main challenge.
