The Savory plants, in Latin Satureja, are annual plants like the garden savory Satureja hortensis, or perennials like Satureja montana. These aromatic herb plants from the Lamiaceae family, closely related to thymes, have exceptional medicinal properties. Mostly native to Mediterranean regions, they are found in nature growing on poor, rocky, limestone and often dry soils, in full sun. Their small leathery leaves, found in Provence herb mixes, are used in cooking to flavour grilled meats, stews, and salads. Plant savory in the vegetable garden or ornamental garden, in a rock garden or at the edge of a well-drained bed: its highly nectar-rich flowering is valuable for bees. Pot cultivation is possible in a loose and well-drained potting compost.
