Kalmia come from North America. They are evergreen shrubs that thrive in acidic soils and are extremely hardy, with great ornamental value. These relatives of heathers (belonging to the Ericaceae family), have spring bell-shaped flowers, resembling sugar decorations. They are elegant all year round with their glossy evergreen foliage and undoubtedly bring a touch of uniqueness to flowerbeds. This genus comprises 6 species, the most well-known being the tall Kalmia latifolia and its more compact relative Kalmia angustifolia, which has a different appearance. Less spectacular, Kalmia microphylla prefers damp and marshy places. In damp and wet climates, such as the Atlantic coast, mountain laurels grow vigorously, forming real thickets. They thrive in partial shade and dappled sunlight and make good companions for azaleas, pieris, and rhododendrons. Kalmias are well-suited for container cultivation on the patio, as long as the soil does not dry out.
