The cold- and drought-resistant perennials in this selection withstand at least –15 °C and a shortage of water. Some prefer full sun, while others also tolerate dry shade, particularly beneath trees. Depending on the variety, they can be used in borders, edging, on slopes, or in rock gardens.

These plants are perfectly suited to harsh winters and very dry summers. However, most will appreciate well-drained soil, especially in winter, as poor drainage could otherwise jeopardise their survival. In full sun, Stachys byzantina ‘Big Ears’ spreads large, grey, woolly leaves. Sedum ‘Herbstfreude’ bears broad, wine-red flower heads at the end of the season above fleshy foliage. Eryngium bourgatii thrives in poor, stony soil and produces metallic blue flower heads. In dry shade, Geranium macrorrhizum ‘Spessart’ forms an evergreen, aromatic carpet, flowering pinkish-white in spring.

Our buying guide “9 cold and drought-resistant perennials” presents the main plants that combine both of these qualities.
