Description

Eryngium bourgatii, called sea holly or ornamental thistle, is a compact perennial with stunning metallic blue inflorescences.

This beautiful species with upright stems, which can vary in size depending on the soil, reaches a height of 40 to 60cm (16 to 24in). Its magnificent divided and thorny foliage is greyish-green, even whitish in very dry places. The ovoid floral heads of Eryngium bourgatii are bluish-purple, globular and surrounded by large thorny bracts which are very decorative, and grey-blue shades with purple. Fresh or dried, the flowers are highly prized by florists.

Grow Eryngium bourgatii in light, well-drainied soil, even limestone, in the sun, alongside Gaura lindheimeri 'Snowstorm', Verbascum bombyciferum 'Polarsommer', and Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna'.
