The Magnolias in this selection produce particularly large, impressive, often fragrant flowers. At the top of the list, Magnolia grandiflora, aptly named Large-flowered Magnolia or Summer Magnolia, with evergreen foliage and summer flowering. This tree native to the United States has given rise to numerous varieties, of varying size and habit. Among them, Magnolia grandiflora Goliath stands out with its unusually large flowers that can reach 30 cm (12in) in diameter, highly fragrant. Magnolia grandiflora 'Treyve', a magnificent tree, produces creamy white flowers all summer long that resemble tulips and measure over 20 cm (8in) in diameter. Some botanical species, rarer in gardens, also display huge flowers. Let's mention Magnolia hypoleuca (obovata), a beautiful Japanese tree that surprises with its immense leaves as well as its beautifully scented 20 cm (8in) flowers in shades of cream and pink. Magnolia officinalis biloba produces waxy 20 cm (8in) flowers in a cream colour, with a pleasant fragrance, set against very large leaves in May-June. Also discover M. macrophylla, a species with luxuriant foliage and white flowers reaching 25 cm (10in).
